SCHOOL OF MUSIC-- SONGS AND TIMING
SCHOOL OF MUSIC:: Songs and Timing
I actually wanted to say songs and seasons but then I felt a lot of people could misunderstand the point in this post. Last year while working with some Artistes, I chose a particular song for one of the Artistes and somebody said that the song was a seasonal song because of it's lyrics. I get exactly what he meant but I don't really believe in seasonal songs like that and I will tell you why. What he meant by seasonal song, is songs that the lyrics point to an event of a particular season. For instance, if your song is talking about the death of Jesus, then it's Easter song and if it's talking about the Birth of Jesus then it's Xmas song lol..
I understand all that but still as a hit song maker, I don't believe in seasonal song. Great songs don't really have seasons. Choirs still sing "Because he lives" by SINACH in January, June, July and every other month. Going by what song artistes called seasonal songs, this particular song is an Easter song and should be sang only in Easter. Timi Dakolo did a song for Nigeria titled "Great Nation" that should normally be sung on Nigerian independence day. But the song is not only sung at independence day, political gathering but sung even in church events. I strongly believe if season can cage your song, then the song is weak, very weak.
That said, I hope I have tried to clear that part. Even if your message is seasonal as it relates to an event, make a great song out of it so it defy seasons. Now what I am addressing here is Timing. In the context of this post, I am treating Timing and Season as a separate entity. I know some people use both words to mean the same some times. But timing here is void of events. So your song doesn't necessarily relate to any event yet some songs need right timing to fly.
Most record labels in the secular music industry understand this better. They plan song release to give the song enough time to reign. Sometimes if a particular song is released, and the song has too much Influence, that would not be a good time to put out just any song into the market else yours won't even be noticed. I remember when Psquare released "Do Me". Any other songs released those period was just a waste of time. If you must drop songs in such timing, it has to be a song that has a strong competitive edge.
For instance, when Mo'Hits released Wande Coals "Mushin 2 Mo'Hits" album, there was this song from the album that was making hit. "You bet, You won it" I am not sure that's the title but you sure know the song, there was this artiste called COLLABO who also dropped another hit with the title "COLLABO" and both his song and Wande Coal's song shared the air waves as both songs were hits. Now it is important to note that those were not the only songs released in Nigeria at that time. What happened is that these two songs, silenced the rest of the songs.
Now for gospel Artistes, the equation is a bit different because you really hardly have gospel songs that has that much power to silence every other songs and there's a reason for this. I will explain that in my SCHOOL OF MUSIC COACHING AND MENTORSHIP CLASS. For gospel Artistes, we can actually have 10 hit songs released at the same time and all of them will enjoy the air waves and people's love.
However, I love to approach song timing for gospel Artistes as you understanding the right time to release certain songs to enable it create the required impact. Some potentially great songs, will never be great if they are released prematurely. Some songs need your personal brand Influence to blow. This is very important. You should know songs that have the power to blow you at the level you are now. Some songs can only build on what you have already achieved, they don't have the strength to blow you at the level you are now. Some songs need promotion to blow, some need a push to blow and some don't even need anything to blow, they just blow. This understanding will help you release your song on right timing. Knowing what song to release at every stage of your life.
