SCHOOL OF MUSIC::  BLENDING NATIVE LANGUAGE WITH ENGLISH TO CREATE HIT SONGS

I want to try to sound as nice, direct and brief as I can on this subject. I hear someone said in a seminar that if you want to blow in Nigeria, you must always blend your NATIVE language with English in your songs. That artistes should not write songs in English all through. I stood up immediately and asked him how come Kirk Franklin's songs blow in Nigeria? How did Don Moen blow in Nigeria? How did Chris Brown songs blow in Nigeria? EBEN has a lot of hit songs written purely in English. SINACH too has all her songs written purely in English except this new single she just released. Mercy Chinwo's super hit song Excess love was written purely in English.

First of all, you need to understand that creating a hit song is a skill and every skill is fueled by knowledge.  If you don't have the knowledge of how to Intentionally create hit songs, all those theories will still not produce any hit for you. In this country I have listened to at least 300 songs done either in native language or a blend of native with English that did not blow and will not blow. You can actually count the number of songs with native language that became a hit in this country and I can tell you categorically that the songs didn't become hits because of language no way.

While I admit that this theory is not entirely useless, let me emphasize that it will only work within the principle that governs creating hit songs. If I take those songs like EKWUEME, Mma Mma etc that has a blend of native language in them,  I will show you why they blow, it is not the igbo language that made them blow. The use of the language in those songs aligned with the rule for creating hit songs. Don't be carried away with that gist about blending languages before your songs will blow. Get knowledge on how to create hit songs Intentionally and you can blow your songs with or without native languages in them.
