SCHOOL OF MUSIC::  Gospel Artistes Vs Record Labels.

This is still part of my "Music Business" post. Yesterday, I established the fact that nobody really does music for money, however, money is very important for you to create quality resource that will build your brand. I am taking time to lay foundation for the Music Business post because it is huge. I will not even be able to finish it in one post.

I know that a lot of you artistes are praying for a record label to sign you and sponsor your career. That's a beautiful prayer. But do you even understand what a record label is? Do you know what it means to be signed to a record label? If you have a slight understanding what that means, you would stop praying and wishing that yeye prayer and wish.. you can't be looking for, wishing for or praying for a record label when you have a terrible mindset about the "Business of Music"... You can't tell a record label that is going to put in millions of Naira on top your career or ministry that you are not doing music for money.

First thing you should know about record labels is that they are a Business Organizations. They are in the Business of Music. For them it is all about Business. Now in my previous post I mentioned that business is not about money. But It however involves Money. I hope you understand the difference.. Listen and memorize that line because you need it to understand the Business of Music.. Business is not about money but it however involves money.

Once you are signed to a record label, you are in for Business. They help you organize your life, career and put structure to your career. Doing this will cost them millions to achieve. What are they doing? They are investing in You. Now that is the Business. Investment in you is the business and eventually that investment will naturally bring money. Some of you have been taught that it is a sin to charge money for invites to minister so now you don't want to even collect honorarium self. If you are one of such Artistes, please just AVOID record labels.

This is the major reason we don't have Gospel Record labels in Nigeria. It is the same reason Gospel Artistes are not signed to Secular Record labels in Nigeria. We are yet to have a proper Gospel record label in Nigeria. Even the ones we have, they are still doing paddy paddy, signing their friends and family, back up singers and team members. Even at that, they can not function to optimum capacity because they know they will most likely not get returns on their investment.

Until the gospel Artistes, understand and start operating the Business of Music, the gospel music ministry will continue to struggle. Business of Music will set up a structure that will attract investment. This is so important.

Let me use this post to salute the courage of few Gospel Record Labels that are working hard to set structure for the gospel music ministry.. labels like TWC Records, EEZEE T Records, ROX Nation, TEHILLA Records.

Now I know a lot of gospel records owned by certain Artistes. I won't mention their names but I want to also say that they are showing good examples for setting structures for their own careers.

Dear Artistes, it's time for your to start thinking BUSINESS. I didn't say you should think MONEY ooo. Once you understand the  business of music and operate it, you will be amazed how much Influence and capacity your ministry will build and fast too.
