SCHOOL OF MUSIC - ABSTRACT LAW OF MUSIC
SCHOOL OF MUSIC ::: ABSTRACT LAW OF MUSIC.
This article became a must yesterday after my evening class with one of my mentees from SCHOOL OF MUSIC COACHING AND MENTORSHIP PROGRAM. I had requested for her songs before the class, then I told her that I would give comments on the song. After our first class, she reminded me of the comment on the song and I said the song was good except that it is ABSTRACT.
When she asked that I explain what I meant, I simply told her not to worry because it is a general problem with Nigerian songs and that I would teach her about it later in the class. I could remember last month, two Raggae gospel Artistes sent me their songs for review and I also noticed the same thing and told them their songs were abstract. They didn't quite get it.
For some this might be a complicated subject but if you have been following my school of music articles, you shouldn't be too lost Sha.. what does it mean for songs to be abstract? It means that you are using words or expressions that people can not connect with. People could understand your language especially if it's in English Language but still can't connect with what you are saying.
Abstracts in songs have many forms. For some people it is having too many disjointed messages in a song, it could also be in form of having Incoherent lines or expressions and for some, it could be just lifting scriptures and dumping in songs.
For instance, you find Nigerian gospel Artistes and song writers write songs like.. "Lord I give you praise" and next line is "You are the one who delivered Daniel".
You see that's an abstract right there. How did Lord I give you praise relate with Uncle Daniel's deliverance? Are you really giving God praise because of Daniel's deliverance? Shuuuu.. how is it doing you?
A lot of Nigerian Gospel songs are abstract in all three categories mentioned. Most Nigerian Gospel song have too many disjointed Messages. Sometimes you listen and can't even understand what they are communicating.. it is difficult for people to connect with songs like this. To overcome the spirit of sounding abstract, you have to first understand the central message you want to pass across and use words and lyrics that only captures that expression. If You listen to Travis Intentional song, the message is clear. Whereever you find yourself, God Intentionally puts you there and no matter what happens, it will all work out for your good.
Listen to Moses Bliss, the message is clear, God is too Faithful to Fail. From the very first line of the song to the last communicates this simple message in different shades. Some of you will just go and lift the story of David and Goliath and sing full album on it. Abstracts! Avoid sounding abstract, centralize your message and bring it home.
