SCHOOL OF MUSIC - ESTABLISH A CONNECTION FIRST BEFORE MESSAGE
SCHOOL OF MUSIC:::: ESTABLISH A CONNECTION FIRST BEFORE MESSAGE.
Many years ago Psquare released a song I think the title was "ASAMKPOKOTO" not quite sure. From the first time I heard the song, I fell deeply in love with the song lol. Anywhere I heard the song playing, I will stop and listen while singing to it as well. Oh how I loved this song!
Then one day I was invited to MC an event in Lagos. It wasn't long before the DJ started playing the song. Damn! The joy in my heart erhn. I started singing the song so passionately like I was Paul of Psquare. Then as we got to the 2nd solo, something hit me. Wait a minute! You mean I have been cursing myself since and didn't even know?
The solo says.. see me I dey craze, e be like say I dey mad ooo, asamkpoto baby no be so, see my head dey pain me, life looking lonely, Etc can't even remember it all. Terrible lyrics that are full of curses. There's even a part of the chorus that says "I'm going insane".
Dear lord please forgive me. So I have been singing and cursing myself since? Sadly I still love the song till today just that I avoid that 2nd solo. I allow Psquare sing that 2nd solo then I will join them on the chorus lol.
If you have been following my school of music articles, you would have been familiar with me saying messages don't blow songs. Absolutely! Messages don't blow songs. You would probably think that the reason you love those songs you love is because of the messages in them but you are so wrong. The reason you love those songs is simply because you connected with the song emotionally. The song got your attention first, then you fell in love with the song before you even cared to listen to what the song is saying.
There are many songs with very good messages that you don't like. You know this is true. Establishing a Connection with your audience is much more important than that message you are pushing to them. Without that connection with your sound, they won't even care about your message. Understand that music is not preaching! Music is not Lyrics! Music is SOUND. Dear lord!! I wish somebody can get this! Let me say this again, music is not MESSAGE, music is SOUND and what that sound does is to connect with the emotion of your audience. Until your message has a sound that connects, it won't be heard.
A lot of people in the world are just like me. They love and sing songs without even listening to the message at first. It is as they sing the song because they are connected to it that makes them want to understand the lyrics and the message of your song. Of course there are many songs in the world that you love so much without even understanding the language or the message. One of these songs is JERUSALEMA by MASTER KG. You might want to download it and listen to understand. The song is a hit here in Nigeria but none of us understand what they are saying
In your song, seek to connect. Create sounds that will establish that connection with your audience. I know some of you are thinking is sound not the producers' job? Listen whatever your music becomes, it begins with you the Artistes. The way you write, the melody you give to the song, the genre of the song and your choice of words. These ultimately set the mood for the sound your producer give to interpret the song.
Did I say good message is bad? No sir! Did I say you should not write good lyrics? No sir! I am saying connect with your audience with your message, make sure you craft your message in a way that it is relatable or simply give your lyrics and message a sound that it can flow to the heart of your audience. Because while the message is important, how the message is passed is much more important.
