SCHOOL OF MUSIC - GOD'S VISION, YOUR RESPONSIBILITY
SCHOOL OF MUSIC ::: GOD'S VISION, YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
I have been wanting to write this article for long but time wouldn't permit me, but after my conversation with a gospel artiste yesterday, it became imperative to write this article.
Yesterday I met a young man who walked into TWC Media office years back to make enquiry about the studio recording session, promised he was going to come and record an album but never came back. As I made to cross the road, I recognized him walking towards me. Interestingly he also recognized me and we shook hands. After a few pleasantries, I asked him about MUSIC and his reply was short, simple and straightforward; "No Money". He told me he has dropped music for now because there's no money. I shared a few things with him, encouraged him and we parted ways.
I am writing this post to speak to any gospel Artiste who may be in the same situation right now, struggling to do music but no money. I know it is the major problem with many young Artistes. What I am about to say is not a MUSIC LAW, it is an advice and if you feel it's worth it, you can go ahead and implement, if not just read and pass. No need to argue.
If you are an artiste who's not signed to a PROPER RECORD LABEL, please get something that will be generating money for you to fuel your dream. Notice I used the word "proper" record label oooo. Some record labels are not proper ooo. Record contract on paper is not a record deal. A proper record label takes care of her Artistes and the Artistes's Career so all you do as an artiste is to create music and a valuable one at that. But if you are not signed to this kind of record label or not signed to any record label at all, then you need to leave active (full-time) music alone for a while and focus on building a strategy to generate consistent income. It may not be too much money, but the money must be consistent so that you can plan with.
Honestly you don't really need to much money to BLOW but you need CONSISTENT money to blow.
Truth is that you are most likely not going to build Influence and blow or do it fast without money. No matter how great your songs are, you need money to promote it. It may not be too much money but still money is needed to promote. It is a fact that great songs don't need too much promotion before it blows but still that little promotion it needs, still require little money.
You can not afford to build your career or Ministry by begging for everything. You beg for coaching class and mentorship, beg for studio recording sessions and beg for promotion. You are simply not ready for Influence yet. You may have the greatest songs that will bless lives more than ever but if you don't have money to record and get them out to be heard, you may die with it. Stay there and be quoting "when God gives you vision, he will make provision available". When your pastor needs money for church building, he doesn't wait for provision from God, he asked church members to sow seeds for the project. If you don't take responsibility for that vision God committed in your hand and be waiting for one provision erhn, God's vision may die in your hands. Take your music seriously.
Music needs money! Read that again, Music needs money!. Money is to music what fuel is to a car. Without fuel the car won't move, it won't even start self. Without money, your music won't start and won't move oo. You need to fuel your music dream. Treat your music like a career, invest in it like a Business. Get a job if you have to, start a Business if you can. Invest yourself into something that will bring you Consistent money to fund your music with. Planning to fund and sustain your music career/Ministry with honorarium is a recipe for failure.
Years ago, PITA and PSALM EBUBE opened my eyes to this truth. Even when these two guys have songs that are already getting popular, they were still working in a company. I remembered I was to interview PITA on my TV show then and he said he couldn't make it for the schedule because he would be at work. I was shocked to find out that he was working. By then IMELA was already doing well on radio. PSALM EBUBE too after dropping a hit sound featuring Pat Uwaje of Midnight Crew, was still working in a company. You see you don't have to work. The message is to create a means of Consistent income either by working, business or any legit means best for you. You may need a bit of Consistency to create Influence and Consistency requires Consistent income to sustain.
To record a good song cost good money. To have good music video cost good money and to have good promotion cost good money too. Yes I know you can get the best for less if you know your way. But still it's safer to have good money to fuel your dream. Don't wait for anybody for help, take responsibility for your career and Ministry.
